1. Fotografia

Researchers said men generally preferred women they perceive are open to short-term sexual relationships, with women after longer-term matches.

Women who were open to short-term sexual relationships were usually seen by others as more attractive.

Dr Lynda Boothroyd, of Durham University’s psychology department, told the BBC Scotland news website: “This study shows we can make these kind of instinctive judgements for sex. We have a subconscious – not always right but reasonable – guide.”

2. Comunicarea pe chat

The new findings suggest that chat-up lines used by women are perceived as most effective when they are direct (e.g. “Want to meet up later tonight?”) rather than more subtle (e.g. “Hello, how is it going?”) or sexual/humorous (e.g. “Your shirt matches my bed spread, basically you belong in my bed”).

The research by French scientists was based on tests carried out at Paris Nanterre University where men were shown pictures of women with different coloured hair, then made to take a general knowledge test.

Those who had been shown pictures of blonde women scored lower marks than those who had been shown pictures of brunettes and redheads.

Professor Thierry Meyer, joint author of the study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, said: “It proves that people confronted with stereotypes generally behave in line with them.

“Blondes have the potential to make people act in a dumber way, because they mimic the unconscious stereotype of the dumb blonde.”

The key finding was that participants rated as more likeable in the flesh also tended to be rated as more likeable based on their Facebook page. Moreover, an analysis of the cues used to make these judgements also showed parallels between the two mediums. Video-recordings of the face-to-face contacts suggested it was participants who were more non-verbally expressive (through facial expression and tone of voice) who tended to be rated as more likeable.
