Why should anyone be led by you?

“When the shit hits the fan, some guys run and some guys stay.”

Exista putini lideri in presa romana. Restul sunt manageri. Tolontan este un lider, a demonstrat-o. O redactie l-a urmat. Timpul i-a dat dreptate.

Tom Peters : Be Irreplaceable !

Relationship-building encounters don’t happen between “waiter and customer,” “consultant and client,” or “doctor and patient.” They happen between human beings. It is, of course, critically important to treat your customer like a full person, and honor what makes her unique. But that is only half the equation. Make sure that you represent yourself in the encounter, not as a representative of your job role, but as you. Interact with your customer in a way that could only be done by you, a way in which another person could not substitute for you without making the experience different.

Early in my days as a consultant I had a breakthrough moment. I realized that I didn’t want my clients to think of me as “our marketing consultant, Steve,” but as “Steve, our marketing consultant.” This is not a subtle distinction. It’s the difference between being replaceable, and irreplaceable.

Kevin Roberts, preluand un studiu Harvard ( Robert Goffee,  Gareth Jones) :

  1. Show you’re human, selectively revealing weaknesses.
  2. Be a ‘sensor’ collecting soft people data that lets you rely on intuition.
  3. Manage employees with ‘tough empathy’. Care passionately about them and their work, while giving them only what they need to achieve their best.
  4. Dare to be different. Capitalizing on your uniqueness.

Sir Bobby Charlton:

“I can’t say enough about him. Even in his last few years when he was so ill, to still consider other people rather than himself is just unbelievable. I will think of him as someone who was always gracious, always kind whenever I wanted to speak to him. And he has just been magical for the game itself. He was so in love with the game in any shape or form that he will be unbelievably missed.”

Jose Mourinho:

“I hadn’t spoken to him in the last two months because it was hard for me. It was me who found it hard because I didn’t want to think that he was dying, that wasn’t the image that I wanted to keep with me forever of Bobby Robson, that wasn’t the voice I wanted to hear. I wanted to and I will keep with me always the Bobby Robson of every day, a person who had extraordinary passion for life and for football, with an extraordinary enthusiasm.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson:

“One of the kindest people I ever met, he helped me a great deal when I was a young coach and I visited him in Ipswich. He took me, an unknown coach from Sweden, down into the dugout and explained the tactics. The year after Ipswich won the UEFA Cup (in 1981), my team Gothenburg won it and he came and presented the trophy to me. When I became coach of England I called him many times and he was always generous with his advice and helpful. It seems he was as friendly to everybody as he was to me. In fact for me, he was the special one.”

Sir Alex Ferguson:

In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above Bobby Robson. I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed.
His character was hewn out of the coal face, developed by the Durham mining background that he came from. His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a genuinely colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which then he passed on to his sons.
The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile, always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems.”
