Trei scurte: Sambrook, BBC, Haiti

February 1, 2010

1. Richard Sambrook (aici blogul) ex-Director BBC Global News a parasit recent BBC-ul. Luna trecuta a publicat un articol foarte interesant pe Guardian.co.uk despre perspectiva sa asupra media. Un scurt citat:

“I’ve heard at least the past five years described as the year of mobile – but this year it could be true. With Google’s Android providing serious smartphone competition for Apple, and the iPhone breaking free across multiplenetworks, mobile should establish itself as truly a fourth platform alongside radio, television and the web.

(…) In the end, the pay question is about engagement. The 80/20 rule applies here as elsewhere: the paywall advocates are prepared to trade the 80% of casual search-directed grazers to squeeze more value from the 20% of regular brand loyalists. We need web metrics with an agreed, robust measure for engagement – it’s what the advertisers want and, in a world where reach alone does not keep sites alive, we need a common currency.”

2. BBC a lansat la sfarsitul anului trecut BBC- See Also. “See Also is a collection of the best of the web, including comment, newspaper editorials and analysis.”

3. Blogul U.S. State Department a publicat un articol in care unul dintre eroii operatiunilor umanitare din Haiti, Colonelul  Buck Elton, povesteste evenimentele:

“We are operating out of an airfield that does not have electricity, phones or computers or anything other than what we brought in with us when we arrived that first day. I want to emphasize the point that we are still operating that way. We have combat controllers who work 12 hours shifts in the sun and the grass, working radios and liaising with the Haitian authorities in approach control and in our operation center liaises with the Haitian Flight Operations Coordination Center at Tindal Air Force Base in Florida and the Federal Aviation Administration, to sequence in a very large amount of aircraft into a very small field. I’d like to emphasize again, that this airfield is 10,000 feet long. It has one taxiway in the middle of the airfield. It’s a single in/single out operation. You cannot take off and land aircraft at the same time. It’s one and one.”

“I had to threaten an international flight crew that I would tow their 737 into the grass if they did not immediately depart the airfield (they had been on the ground for over 7 hours while aircraft were diverting due to no available parking) I told 50 reporters that if they didn’t move their cars away from where an aeromedical evacuation flight was supposed to park I would bulldoze all the cars into the grass and off the ramp. I ordered the evacuation of 54 orphans on a C-17 against the specific direction of the American Consulate General here at the Embassy, but with the full support of the DHS, INS, NSC and ICE. I met with the Haitian Secretary of State for Agriculture and convinced him to allow airdrop resupply of humanitarian aid.”

Generalul Patton a spus pe vremuri “Lead Me, Follow Me Or Get Out Of My Way”.
